"Out of Bounds: Space, Play, and Borders"

University of Virginia

April 22-23, 2005

"Out of Bounds: Space, Play, and Borders" is UVa's fourteenth annual English graduate conference. This year's keynote speaker is Susan Stanford Friedman, Virginia Woolf Professor of English and Women's Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author, most recently, of Mappings: Feminism and the Cultural Geographies of Encounter, a seminal work on globalism, feminism and border studies.

The conference will examine a range of issues pertaining to literal and figurative boundaries, including cross-cultural encounters, performativity, hybridity, and other forms of transgressive play. It will offer interdisciplinary panels on Comparative Literature, Studies in Women and Gender, Film Studies, Queer Studies, and Anthropology.
